The Mississippi Paralysis Association (MPA) recently donated $37,503 to help fund the Memorial Neurosciences and Rehabilitation’s chapter of ThinkFirst, a national injury prevention program aimed at educating young people about brain and spinal cord injury prevention. The Memorial chapter provides bicycle helmets to school-age children in grades K-5 and Safety T-shirts to children in grades 6-12 who attend a ThinkFirst presentation. MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FOUNDATION RECEIVES BEHAVIORAL HEALTH GRANT FOR 2005 HURRICANE SURVIVOR INITIATIVES

GULFPORT, Miss.—The Memorial Hospital Foundation received a $596,000 grant for Memorial Behavioral Health (MBH) and the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Marriage and Family Therapy Program to administer mental health services in 16 area schools. These programs are the result of efforts begun by Memorial following Hurricane Katrina and were launched at the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year in the Gulfport, Long Beach, Pass Christian, Bay-Waveland and Hancock County school districts. GULFPORT, Miss.— Sue Walker, Bridgett Miller and Melissa Wilson, all Registered Nurses in Labor and Delivery at Memorial, were recently named Guardian Angels. Shannon Cooper, a recent patient at Memorial, credits these three nurses for saving her life. During her pregnancy, Cooper was very anemic and needed blood. The Memorial Hospital Foundation has announced this year’s winners of the Burdonne Young Scholarship in a reception given in honor of the scholarship winners on August 7 at Memorial Hospital. The scholarships are named in honor of Burdonne Young, former nurse for Memorial Hospital for over 50 years. These scholarships are awarded annually to dependents of Memorial employees. Beau Rivage donated 20 children’s books, along with accompanying CDs, to the Memorial Pediatric Unit on October 25, as part of MGM Mirage’s Community Mpact Week. Gulfport Junior Auxiliary Donates Toys to Memorial Pediatric Patients

The Junior Auxiliary of Gulfport has donated toys to the Pediatric Care Unit of Memorial Hospital at Gulfport. Jamie Traylor, Child Life Specialist, Memorial Pediatrics, will use the toys to occupy the young patients’ time and as a way to relax children following medical treatment. “Since playing can actually be considered the “job” of children, these toys will be used to help them do their “jobs” while making their hospital stays more pleasurable and enjoyable.
